When I first came across the Undergraduate of the Year Awards, I wasn’t sure whether to apply. I didn’t think I’d get far, but I told myself there was no harm in trying. It seemed like a good opportunity to reflect on my experiences and share my story, even if it didn’t lead to anything.

I applied for the Multilingual Undergraduate of the Year category because being multilingual has always been more than just a skill to me. It’s something that has shaped my identity and influenced every part of my personal and academic journey. Growing up in Japan, Switzerland, and now studying in the UK, switching between languages has helped me adapt, connect with people, and see the world from different perspectives.

When I found out I’d been selected for the Top 40, I was genuinely thrilled. Then making it to the Top 10 finalists—I was completely shocked. I remember walking into Bloomberg’s London office on assessment day and feeling overwhelmed, not just by the incredible building but by the scale of it all. But everyone I met was so welcoming and supportive, which made the whole experience something I’ll always remember positively.

Being named a finalist still feels surreal. Sitting alongside such inspiring students from other categories—each with their own stories, passions, and goals—was a real honour. It reminded me how many different paths we’re all on, and how valuable it is to celebrate that diversity.

Right now, I’m spending the summer in London completing an internship at Bloomberg. I’m learning so much every day, and I’m incredibly grateful for the people I’ve met and the opportunities I’ve been given. This whole journey, from applying on a whim to being recognised as a finalist, has given me a real boost in confidence and made me even more excited for what’s ahead.

To anyone thinking about applying next year: go for it. You don’t have to be the most polished or have everything figured out. Just be honest, share your story, and see where it takes you. You might be surprised—just like I was.
