What makes an award winner?

We’re looking for someone with infinite potential, someone whose experiences have shaped who they are, what they believe in and what they want to achieve.

Your journey doesn’t need to have been straightforward. Perhaps you’ve faced challenges or adversity and found a way to overcome them. Maybe you’ve turned a difficult experience into something positive, used it to help others or found a new determination to create change. We want to hear your story, not because of what you’ve been through, but because of what you’ve done with it.

The winner will demonstrate:

  • Motivation and self-awareness: you understand your strengths, recognise where you can grow and are motivated to keep learning and developing.
  • Resilience, flexibility and agility: you can adapt when things change, overcome setbacks and keep moving forward. You see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
  • A passion for making a difference – you care about creating positive change, whether that’s in your own life, your community or the wider world. You’re not afraid to think differently or take action.
  • A skills-based approach to learning: you’re curious, open-minded and enjoy putting what you learn into practice. You look for opportunities to develop new skills and bring new perspectives to the challenges you face.
  • A passion for Rolls-Royce and what we do: you’re excited by the opportunity to help solve some of the world’s toughest challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who is bold, curious and ready to reach further. You don’t need to have everything figured out or have a perfect track record. We want to see your potential, understand what drives you and discover what you could achieve when given the opportunity to push your limits.

Your story has shaped your potential. Now we want to see where that potential could take you.

FROM OUR PARTNER

Rolls-Royce and the Undergraduate of the Year

Our people are our power. Their technical expertise, their commitment to delivering excellence to our customers, and their vision of what we can achieve in the future are all fundamental to our continued success. We are a global organisation, employing over 40,000 people in more than 47 countries, and for over 100 years we have built a reputation for engineering innovation and excellence.

We want to ensure that the excellence and ingenuity that has shaped our history continues into our future. Our multi-year transformation programme aims to turn Rolls-Royce into a high-performing, competitive, resilient and growing company. So that we are better able to chart our own destiny and do things tomorrow that we cannot do today.

That’s why we are committed to developing our people’s skills, enhancing flexibility and motivation, and creating a diverse and inclusive workplace where talent can flourish. Alongside our investment in technical excellence, we are focused on future skills such as analytical thinking, resilience, flexibility and agility, leadership and social influence, motivation and self-awareness, creative and systems thinking, curiosity and lifelong learning.

Why an award for those Shaping the Future?

We face a widening capability gap across industries, driven by rising complexity and the pace of innovation. Traditional hiring and development models alone are not enough. The future depends on people who can adapt, think critically, lead with influence, and approach problems with creativity and curiosity.

The Undergraduate of the Year Award for Shaping the Future is designed to recognise and celebrate students who demonstrate these qualities. By highlighting the importance of human skills alongside technical expertise, we want to inspire the next generation to embrace change, drive innovation, and shape a better future for us all.
